We are working on updating our social media, Rona is so informed on the subject of blogs, Facebook, Google Analytics....all stuff I find hard to keep up with. The most exciting part is scheduling some fabulous artists to teach classes and workshops at the studio. Currently we are working on the calender for January, February and March.
'Feed the Birds'

We are offering Zentangle classes, jewelry workshops, watercolor and mixed media of all kinds. Having a local artist community is so important to us. The studio is right down the street from the Arlington Museum of Art and the city is revamping its entire downtown area. Perfect timing for highlighting the art community.

I am very happy to announce 'Zentangle 12' is out and available on Amazon, I loved working with Suzanne McNeill on this book. There is so much to explore with Notans and Zentangle.

When I discovered Notan I was drawn to the beauty and simplicity of the process. Notan is the Japanese word for dark/light, the basic material used is black paper and white paper. My mind immediately went to the similarity of Zentangle and Notan, the basics of Zentangle are also simple materials and the beauty of black lines against white paper.

Zentangle 12 has a section on Notans as well as cut, torn and punched paper. It also incorporates cool new ways to make strings with ink and stencils, plus creating Zentangle Inspired Art on Clayboard and wood.
Not only did I have a chance to teach a couple of classes I found the time to take some classes too. Mixed Media classes with Seth Apter and a Gelli Print class with Cheryl Boglioli, I also got a chance to try out a new product with Cheryl called Powertex, it is a textile hardener. We used strips of old Tshirts to create fabulous textile art on a canvas. Powertex becomes so rigid it can even be used for outdoor items...love it!
I had fabulous students in my classes, we had fun putting together our own Stash and Smash journals from cardstock, paper bags and envelopes. I am really lovin' cut and punched paper and showed them a few easy steps to creating gorgeous pages with Gelatos and paper. Faber-Castell furnished some Gelatos for my class, it's one of my favorite art mediums. I was amazed at how creative everyone was, being inspired by my students is one of the reasons I love teaching.
Birds and more birds....I love quirky, cartoon images of birds. One of the classes I taught incorporated Zentangle® patterns with these whimsical bird figures. Sakura was so helpful in sponsoring this class, they furnished little red pouches and Pigma Microns® for all of my students. I am so thankful to them, nothing beats a Micron pen for tangling. The brilliant color for the birds was achieved with Inktense pencils, again Sakura furnished some of their Koi Water Brushes for the class to use. I prefer using a water brush for any art work I do with Inktense pencils or watercolor pencils, and they are fabulous for your art travel kit.
A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to have 3 of my grandgirls together with me in the studio.

Paula is about to go to college and wanted to create some art for the walls of her new apartment. She did some fabulous work. I introduced her to mid-century modern and she loved it. Here are her wonderful creations, they were inspired by Jenn Ski's books on Mid-Century Modern patterns.
Sarah just loves, loves loves art in every medium. She also likes to do her own thing most of the time. Sarah also liked the mid-century modern style. She challenged me to create a piece featuring this fun bull (again from one of Jenn Ski's books). It was so enjoyable creating with her, choosing color combinations and paper punch outs for the embellishments on the bull. When she suggested putting a snail on the bull's back I was a little hesitant ...but we loved it!!
Share your art with someone, especially if you have children in your life. In fact I have decided anyone who walks into my studio must pick up a brush and apply paint to a canvas. Easel standing ready!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02769161812085319909noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4684362164248178548.post-12408847415504865962015-07-09T16:08:00.002-07:002015-07-09T20:00:08.996-07:00Teaching at Bella Crafts ConnectionsOkay. it's kind of obvious I get to my blog about once a month. I have been longing for a website....I just didn't want to have to do it! One of my art friends is also a very knowledgeable computer/social media person. While I would have loved for her to do it....I bit the bullet and asked her advice on which one was the absolute easiest platform for me to use for a website. The winner Weebly, and it is fabulous, they have an hour video (I watched it 3 times), which covers everything you need. I recommend this site for everyone. Here is the link to cindyshepard.com....advice and comments welcome.
One of the reasons I really needed a website is because I have begun teaching more. I have classes in July and August at a local studio Sparks Creative Arts Studio, owned by my friend and fabulous artist Suzanne McNeill. In September I am teaching at Bella Crafts Connections at the Mall of America in Minnesota. Lots of other wonderful teachers will be there as well...so I will be teaching and of course taking some classes. Hope to see some of you there.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02769161812085319909noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4684362164248178548.post-60552961887188603462015-06-11T18:17:00.000-07:002015-06-11T18:17:43.335-07:00Journals, Gelatos and Paper PunchesI now have quite a collection of paper punches - circles in all sizes and a few squares too. I love using cut up and punched paper and have searched every nook and cranny in my studio to find all of my old paper. Using old paper for cut-ups in a junk journal is a fabulous way to repurpose paper you were never very fond of.
This pink paper with big lips has been in my stash a very long time, it works great for a dress for my paper doll and as a border on the adjacent page. The paper doll has been glued to an envelope in my junk journal that I stamped and colored with Gelatos. The sheet music page is actually a fold out with additional cut papers on the inside.

This is black cardstock and an old calender page in one of my junk journals. I love the simple beauty of the stark white and yellow on the black page. All I used was a few circle punches and a glue stick.

The flower side of this journal page is a greeting card I gessoed, then used black paint to sponge on a stencil pattern and colored with Gelatos. The house journal page is a piece of poster board which had previously been used, I gessoed it - added a few stamps in Staz-On brown and colored with Gelatos. When I adhere paper to a surface which has been colored with Gelatos I use a liquid glue such as Elmer's Glue-All.
I have also been experimenting with cutting tools, next post I will give a few tips for how to use some of these tools to come up with fun and funky shapes.
In May my family has a lot of birthdays, we get together and celebrate them along with Mother's Day. I don't usually make cards but was having such a good time with paper cut-outs I decided to make cards for the family. Especially since the price of a card is about $5.00, or more!!

I used circle punches and decided to add the remnants from the black paper to the inside of the cards.

And why not decorate the envelopes as well. I am so obsessed I just ordered more circle punches in different sizes....can't wait to play. These are perfect designs for Zentangle® patterns.

Loving the Mid-Century Modern Designs. I recently ordered the book Mid-Century Modern Patterns with artwork by Jenn Ski. These shapes are perfect for using up my scrap papers.
Just got out my scissors and hole punches and started making shapes. It was fun to build upon each page.

I used black and brown cardstock as well as the inside of an envelope for paper cut-outs.
Blue cardstock in one of my Smash journals, I cut shapes from the page itself then added cut and punched shapes with black, brown and turquoise paper.

The trick to building all the images and layers on each page is the glue....my oh my how I struggle with glues. I have tried glue sticks, Elmer's Glue-all, Modge Podge, Golden Matte Medium, spray glues, adhesive dots, double stick tape, Zip-Dry....everything I can get my hands on. There is no right glue to use for everything.....Zip-Dry is a favorite of mine for the heavier papers. Glue sticks are great for small images and lightweight papers. But to tell the truth I use them all at some point......the great experiment continues - still seeking the best all around glue!! Open to all suggestions.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02769161812085319909noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4684362164248178548.post-25308357350496260052015-03-24T19:00:00.001-07:002015-03-24T19:00:27.768-07:00Gelatos on a Paper Bag Journal Page

When I need inspiration I love to pour through art and craft books and magazines, I am one of those people who have stacks and stacks of ripped out pages of things that caught my eye and journals full of quickly jotted down ideas. Then along comes Pinterest, I don't have to dig through my closet anymore to find that one page of inspiration or try to find my long lost idea in one of my many journals. I cherish these journals and stacks of stuff and still rely on them.... but really love that quick fix of just looking through my Pinterest boards.

About a year ago I saw some wonderful work on Pinterest using book pages, something I have always loved to do. As a recycle artist I have tons of old and rescued books and love the old pages, even the smell of an old book page puts me in heaven. I combined a little gesso, Zentangle® and Inktense pencils and had a great time drawing quirky little birds. I recently filmed a YouTube for Design Originals demonstrating this fun art project.

I also have a passion for stencils, so many artists are turning their personal styles into really beautiful stencil designs. When I went to the Craft and Hobby Association Trade Show earlier this year I finally got to meet one of my favorite artists, Mary Beth Shaw aka Stencil Girl. What I wouldn't give to have every single stencil in her line...but alas I had to choose. I had some fun with them recently, Mary Beth graciously posted my project on her blog today. Take a minute to scoot over there, she has guests artists on her blog all the time...and they come up with some fabulous ways to use stencils.
Since I am in love with these stencils I decided to combine one of them with my birds and book pages, this page was created with Shattered, I used gesso on the stencil and then colored it in with Inktense and outlined it all with a Sakura micron pen......fun!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02769161812085319909noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4684362164248178548.post-49007349417477577462015-02-21T13:39:00.003-08:002015-02-21T13:39:50.188-08:00Mr. Potato Head I admit it I love the old toys that remind me of my childhood....which was some time ago. When I was a kid they introduced Mr. Potato Head and for those who don't remember.....it was a bunch of plastic parts like eyes, ears, noses and hats which had a little plastic stake attached to them....you simply got a real potato and stuck them where you wanted them. I came up with some really cool combinations and remember the smell of a rotting potato to this day! You should never leave a dressed up potato under your bed for more than a day or two.....just sayin'.

The other day while looking for watercolor paper in my studio I found a huge sheet of 300lb cold press paper. It always seemed too thick and coarse before but this time it spoke to me. Already full of texture and weight I decided to use a minimal amount of "decoration".

Chicks

While I normally begin everything with gesso I decided to use a stick of charcoal to draw and then to keep it from smearing while I was painting I sealed it with matte medium. Yikes, it really smeared when I started brushing on medium....but I went with it. Sometimes mistakes make the best art. After it dried I used watered down Golden fluid acrylics....about 3 layers of color.

Drifting

I added more black with oil pastels and black ink......I like it. It's a very restful way of working, simple but colorful....and just a little mark making.

I also love experimenting with small, odd-shaped canvas. This one is a 4 x 12.....a little gesso, Golden fluid acrylics and black ink. I was really excited to be there, it's always fun....but last year my priority was moving my mom and getting her and my little brother settled .....MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!...so back to making more time for art.

The show ran Jan 9th thru 13th. There are lots of new products to see of course but also lots of wonderful classes to take with some really accomplished artists. It's like the who's who in the craft industry.
Supplies from Pam's class.

My first class was with the fabulous Pam Carriker, I love her art. We made journals using her color palette...which just happens to be my favorite colors too! We played with her new stencils, paints, rub-ons and I finally got to try one of Pam's favorite products...Derivan Liquid Pencil. She showed us how to apply it with a sponge over a stencil....didn't know you could use it so many ways. Once you blend it it has a hazy, halo effect.
Another artist I always enjoy taking workshops with is Traci Bautista....I love her recycle ideas for creating art. She generously gave each student a copy of her book 'Printmaking Unleashed'.....it's full of inspiration. Thank you Traci!

I have admired Rebekah Meier's work with fabric for many years, but never taken a class with her. This was my chance. I really enjoyed the class and the new products we used. Rebekah furnished us with some of her cool new stencils, a fabulous tissue paper she had designed and some really nice fabric banners from Fabric Elements.
Besides classes and workshops I ran around to different booths and sat in on their make and takes. It was such a blast learning how to use new materials. I am formally in love with Gelatos...scrumptious new colors have been added to the line. Talked to Rita Barakat who does some wonderful things with Faber-Castell products, need to take a workshop with Rita real soon. Luckily for me she lives in Dallas and I live in Fort Worth...can't wait to get together with her.

The stacks of background pages in my studio are many. These pages are mostly watercolor paper with acrylic paints, maybe a few zentangle® patterns with markers, collage pieces....possibly the remnants of paint left on a brush before I place it in a water dish, a wonderful piece of image left from a collage or the scrap of a beautiful napkin I decided not to use. My favorite way to play with background pages is to just make random marks, alternating cool colors and warm colors until I have a pleasing combination adding more stuff as I go.
Mixed Media painting on 9 x 12 watercolor paper.

While I was cleaning my mom's house for her recent move I ran across an old coloring book, it was full of simple images. I love, love, love these images. Recently I incorporated them into a class I was teaching at Sparks Creative Arts Studio, "Run with Scissors Play with Paint™". I went back to the coloring book images the other day while playing with the backgrounds and decided to trace this fun bird with a worm onto tracing paper. I cut it out and used matte medium to glue it down, then added a little gesso and paint to complete the mixed media painting. What a quick way to make a colorful art piece, also works wonders if you find it difficult to draw an image on a busy background.

GO PLAY!!.....and borrow your kids coloring book every once in awhile.
Love this trade show...so many talented and giving people and so many fun new products and trends. It's a whirlwind few days.
The CHA Designer group hosted some great sessions where they freely shared what they had learned about working in and supporting the art and craft community. Inspiration flowed freely!!
My banner for "Banners of Hope"

This year I was happy to be one of the designers contributing some of my art to the worthy Charity Wings project, "Banners of Hope". As a designer you could sign up to receive an 8"x10" canvas banner from the Fabrics Art Council of CHA and return it all "fancied up" with your own art work and inspiring message. I chose to use acrylic paint and collage on my banner with the theme of friends. Friends are so important to us all when we go through tough times.
There was also a booth set up at the show where anyone could participate and create their own unique banner. After the show all of them will be taken on the road to display in hospitals, shelters and charity organizations ....small messages of hope to brighten someone's day.
How delightful to have an instant reference to the different styles of zentangle art done by artists from all over the world. Everything is represented in this book. Small, simple tiles which are appealing as little masterpieces or as up close examples of the artist's favorite tangles. I know I have a few tangles which seem to make it into every tangled piece of art I do.
The cover is the truly beautiful work of artist Lorrie Bennett.

The book is chock full of Zentangle inspired art and objects - everything from household items like lamps and mugs to jewelry, pianos, pottery and tennis shoes. Giving credence to what many tanglers claim, "if it stands still I will tangle on it."
One of my favorite things about Zentangle is how different each person's work is. Even though they use many of the same patterns the drawing style, color choices and intricacy of the work can vary greatly and be applied to so many different forms of art. This book is a real celebration of the beauty of the art of zentangle.
Beginning to look a little like a city from Dr. Seuss, not sure if it is finished yet.

All three of the pieces in this blog post began as simple strings drawn while I was on the phone or watching television, I added a few tangles then put them away. Over days and sometimes weeks I would go back to them and add a few more tangles. My intention is not necessarily to fill the entire page...that always seems a little overwhelming to me. But invariably I get in the flow and before I know it they become almost like little cities, strange creatures or bizarre flowers. Proving what Rick and Maria, the developers of Zentangle, have always said "anything is possible one stroke at a time."
Thank you to all of the wonderful artists contributing their work to make 'The Beauty of Zentangle' a success, you each made it possible "one stroke at a time."Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02769161812085319909noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4684362164248178548.post-5325546827498428222013-08-31T15:19:00.000-07:002013-08-31T15:19:30.726-07:00Creative Art Studio and Gallery Night A lot, a lot, a lot has happened lately. Life has been full of distractions. Just when I felt I had some focus with my art...boom, life gets in the way. I was so excited a couple of months ago when I discovered "Pickle Ball"....it's played on an indoor court and is a cross between ping pong and tennis. I really hate exercising but love sports...the Texas heat makes it really hard to play some of my favorite outdoor sports...soccer, golf and tennis. This seemed a perfect way to get a little exercise, relieve a little stress and enjoy myself.... I even got my "super golfer" husband involved. Great, we can spend a little fun time together. Then it happened, he was going for a shot and fell like a plank....broke his hip and had to have it replaced. It's a tough recovery time so we are still working on it...slowly.
In the meantime I had been helping friend and fellow artist Suzanne McNeill-Sparks open her new Art Gallery and Studio of Creative Arts in Arlington, Texas. The goal was to host her grand-opening in conjunction with Fall Gallery Night , a wonderful art evening involving galleries in Fort Worth and surrounding areas. Suzanne had invited me to include my "Moustachio Houses" in the gallery opening....really exciting but I needed to get some more work done on them. Luckily, I have a home studio...so I did a little art work and went to check on the hubby...then back to a little art work. It's finally done and I am ready for the opening.
Wish I could afford to subscribe to everyone!! So I was thrilled when they accepted some of my art for one of their publications. Two of my "Moustachio Houses" were included in the Summer issue of Somerset Studio Gallery. By the way ...page 138 "Ooh La La" and page 139 "Zany Tears" for those who have this issue. I sent the art for a "whimsical challenge" and they decided to use it in the Gallery instead. Somerset has tons of requests for art.....take a big leap and go for it. You never know when you will be accepted...and it's so much fun to see your work in a popular magazine.
These are on approx. 11"x 15" watercolor paper...collage, paint, mark making...love paint pens for a really glossy black. I have also done a few on canvas and smaller watercolor paper...as well as canvas made from recycled, gessoed envelopes....one of my favorite surfaces. Since I have had rubber stamps made from some of the images I am going to do some cards as well....just need to come up with some funny sentiments. I'm not so good at that!! It is all so handy for keeping up with the art world, friends and family....but I don't always feel like keeping up with everything and everyone. Sometimes I just need to retreat to my "art cave"... or "art hole", stick my head in the sand and not come out for awhile. Guess it's time to get my head out of the sand and get back to sharing some of my artful endeavors.
The fabulous studio of Susan Wechsler.

The hand surgery and cast kept me from doing much in the way of art for awhile....it's hard to accomplish a lot with one hand....and overusing it got a little painful. But I'm back with a bang!! I just returned from a truly amazing workshop in the studio of Susan Wechsler, a mosaic artist in Longmont, Colorado. Susan has teamed up with artist Laurie Beth Zuckerman to host a 2-day workshop on Memory Jugs.

Laurie critiquing one of the memory jugs in the workshop.
It was fun to hear about all the memories evoked by the artists in their masterpiece.

As much as I love almost every type of art, my favorites have always been folk art and outsider art. I was born and raised in Texas and remember seeing memory jugs since I was a child.....I have always been fascinated with them. About 5 or 6 years ago I began trying to find out more about them...what they really are and most of all how I could make my own. I was surprised by how little information was available. I could not find out what the putty like substance was that most of them had been made from many years ago. There just wasn't much known about them. I experimented with everything I could think of... even cement. Then a little over a year ago I found Laurie Beth Zuckerman, she had a book on CD which I ordered, 'Memory Jugs - Images, Instructions and Theories', ...I was blown away by how much information she had acquired on this little-known folk art.

Judy Evans arranging her items for placement on the memory jug....or in Judy's case...her urn!!

When I received an email from Laurie announcing the workshop she would be giving in June with Susan I knew I had to be there...to learn from the master!! The bonus was she was doing the workshop with Susan Wechsler, whose main forms of mosaic art are the wonderful 'Memory Dresses' and 'Altars' she creates from antique china, figurines and all kinds of other fabulous old stuff. I took my artist friend, Judy Evans, and together with 8 other artists from various backgrounds we spent two remarkable days learning from Laurie and Susan and each other. The collections of old stuff brought by these artists was a feast for the eyes and many brought things they had made to add to the jug... polymer clay, pottery, jewelry. I had some pieces I had made from air-dry clay as well as old jewelry pieces. I have been collecting for so many years it was fun to go through it all before the workshop and find pieces I wanted to include.
Finished jug, I also love blue and white china.

My jug was really large, it was a glass wine jug.... it had once contained a Carlo Rossi Sangria...but I liked the shape and wanted to see what I could do with the recycled bottle. Truly creating something from nothing. My favorite item I put on the jug is an old Toni Home Permanent Curling Rod from my grandmother. She use to give herself a Toni perm quite often....I can still remember the smell in the kitchen. I love my memory jug, it's on my mantle now .... I was thrilled to see the work done by the other artists at the workshop. Many had brought beautiful, collectible pieces from family members and made a true memory jug devoted to their family member. Perhaps the oddest was from my friend Judy (she's always a little odd, I think that's why we get along so well). Judy wishes to be cremated after her death and made her own urn for her ashes. I love this....in fact I may steal her idea!!...and make my own urn as well. Let's just hope neither of us need it for awhile.
This workshop was so successful Laurie and Susan have planned another for September. If you would like to learn how to create your own folk art memory jug I highly recommend attending one of these workshops. It's a great location with great instructors and interesting artists working along side you.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02769161812085319909noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4684362164248178548.post-63928176616272433552013-02-27T11:22:00.003-08:002013-03-01T06:50:22.523-08:00I'm Hand - icapped I have discovered how difficult life can be when you lose the use of one of your limbs...and how much you use your non-dominant hand! For about a year I have been bothered by basal joint arthritis in my thumb (I know, it's an old person thing). It's a painful thing too...cause it is bone on bone. The pain I could bear, dropping things was frustrating but the kicker was when I couldn't open my jar of gesso while alone in the studio. Okay...this is serious something had to be done. On February 7th I had surgery and have been in a cast ever since. Really puts a dent into my art time and even computer time...a lot harder to type and still can't open my jar of gesso. In fact I can't button jeans or put on a bra...but maybe that's too much information.

Another bummer is I had visions of the old casts of white plaster being on my arm....perfect for Zentangle right? Nope, they didn't even have white, and it's not plaster it's a type of stiff cloth...not so perfect for tangling on. Many other colors to choose from.... I chose purple. I did do some decoration...but this stuff won't even take washi tape very well so had to add duck tape too. It comes off March 6th - between now and then I may cover it with gesso and turn it into a mini canvas of sorts. Not so sure my doctor would approve....but it may make a great submission to one of the Stampington publications or Cloth, Paper Scissors. What do you think??
Art supply doodle in CPS

I do have some good news to share. One of my goals this year is to submit some of my art to publications. Yay, I was accepted recently into the March/April issue of Cloth, Paper Scissors. They had a call for an "art supply doodle" and mine was one of the ones chosen for publication. I would really encourage you to look for those calls of art as an easy way to begin submitting your own work. CPS is beginning a new publication called I Heart Paper....follow this link for submission information. It is due March 4th, give it a shot!!
I was working on some art with my new line of stamps, "Moustachio", and trying to come up with names for each character. A friend of mine, who just happens to be a psychologist, was here for an afternoon of art. I finished the Artist Trading Card and asked what a good name would be...she didn't blink an eye...she immediately suggested co-dependent. I love it, so here is my ATC "Co-dependent". I used gesso, acrylic paints and stamped the image onto tissue paper. I love using tissue paper with stamps, it is so absorbent...you get such a clear image. I also colored the tissue paper with gel pens before I applied it to the ATC with gloss medium.I added the legs with gel pens as well.
Every year I get to meet some of my favorite artists and crafters as well as getting a sneak peek of all the new products. Every time I go I am struck by how many new markers are out there. I want them all!!!...even if I am not sure what to do with half of them. Some are permanent others water soluble...fine tip or chisel tip...transparent or opaque....I'm confused! Somebody please fill me in.

This year I did a few make and takes with some fabulous artists and saw demos with others. Joanne Sharpe was demonstrating Twinkling H2O's and Silks Acrylic Glazes by Luminarte. These are on my list of what to add to my craft stash. Joanne also has some great online classes I must take.
Beacon adhesives had a make and take decorating these gorgeous little felt bags. They had tons of flowers, buttons and gems and glitter to choose from. Janet Takahasi and Angie Vangalis choose the gray bag....I went for the turquoise (my favorite color). Kind of wish I had gone with gray too...really beautiful with the brightly colored embellishments added. Had a great time walking the show with Janet and Angie, both are exceptional lettering artists who seem to know what to do with every marker and brush they pick up.

Just got back from a fabulous week in Anaheim, CA...attended the Craft and Hobby Association Trade Show. So many things to talk about... I will be filling you in all week. There were so many talented artists and crafters there.....so many great new products. I will also be talking about my new line of Moustachio House stamps.

This is one of the stamps, measures 2 1/2" x 2". I colored it in with gel pens.

They were manufactured for me by a company in Anaheim and I picked them up before the CHA show. I love, love, love them...it's such a great feeling to see your designs become stamps. They are based on a series of drawings I have done over the last few months. Fun little house shapes with mustaches...."Moustachio" is the name of the line.

Same stamp....colored in with Inktense pencils. This watercolor paper is a little rough...next time I will use a smoother paper.

It's been great fun to experiment with these little guys...adding personality and flourish to them. I plan to give each one a name...any ideas for the one above?? Since I love to work in my Smash Journals I have drawn, painted and collaged some of my houses in my journals as well.
These are hand-made journals, filled with old envelopes. I normally add gesso and scrap paper to them and then add painted images. I love using recycled materials...envelopes can be made very durable for journal use with gesso, paint and collage. She clears out her studio and invites other local artists to bring in their wares. This year she celebrates her 39th year of the Ladybug Christmas Collection.

Repurposed wine bottles is one of my contributions to the sale, I make wine chimes (wind chimes from wine bottles), photo holders and scoops. The scoops have turned out to be a real hit...I first discovered them when I was cutting bottles for other projects to go in my book on recycled bottles, 'Bottle Art', and messed up on one of the bottles. It looked just like a scoop so I smoothed down the sharp edges and started brainstorming about how to cover them to make them more durable.

Wine scoops ready for sale. It's a Scoop!!

I normally paint with a paper towel on my table ... and use it to wipe off paint from my brushes. They have so much glorious color on them I save them all. These turned out to be the perfect solution for the scoops...very colorful and makes the glass more durable. I also discovered the color was more vibrant if I painted the bottle with gesso first. When gesso is dry I apply torn strips of paper towel with Modge Podge until I like the way it looks. When dry I apply two more coats of Modge Podge for extra protection.
Close-up of paper towel texture.

Normally I have to cut down the cork a little to insert it back into the bottle, I then drill a hole through the cork and wrap wire for a handle. These are great for entertaining...scoop up nuts and other dry snacks. Don't put them in the dishwasher and wipe clean rather than wash.
Wine bottle photo holder with added acrylic paint.

I used the same technique on the photo holder and added additional acrylic paint. If you are making gifts this holiday season try this easy craft. Make your own paper towels by applying paint...possibly add water to run the colors together and let dry. Have fun!! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02769161812085319909noreply@blogger.com0
